  1. "Without asking leave or depending upon the will of any other man" is the sum of how Locke describes nature. Not breaking into anyone's "perfect freedom" and within the bonds of nature; to live peacefully and equally with everyone else.
"And thus, in the state of nature, one man comes by power of another." Having a select group of leaders emerge and wanting to be in control of their people is natural instinct. But cannot break the state of nature and do as they please but to ensure a more safe place for everyone else.
"Whoever uses force without right" is committing a crime, even if it is the government. When these wrongful actions are done without the consent of the people, the people can dissolve the government as seen fit.

    1. I agree with Ryan because if the people with the authority make laws that the people didnt appoint they are like forcing something into what others didnt want, which means " the people are not therefore bound to obey...and may constitute too themselves a new legislative" as Locke mentions.

  2. 1.)Locke describes the state of nature by explaing it as a state of equality in which nobody has power over another, and that everyone is free to do as they please. But just because they can do as they please does not mean they have the liberty do abuse others.
2.)People leave the state of nature and join a political society by establishing a goverment, because they see that no one is emerging to be a leader. The group thinks they know what is best for the people and how they can be in a more comfortable society.
3.)The only way that the goverment can be dissolved is if it makes laws that were not approved by the people, and in that case the people are not obligated to follow the laws.At that point they may disslove the goverment not feeling comfortable with it.

  4. 1) John Locke describes the state of nature as a place where everyone is equal, "no one having more than another".
    2) People leave the state of nature to join the political system because living in the state of nature means living day by day with insecurity to protect your property joining a group of united people where they preserve their lives, liberties and estates creates a feeling of safety.
    3) Unless the authority makes a law without the consent of the people it is acceptable to dissolve a government.

  5. 1. Locke describes the state of nature as free, where no one has control over no one, “the state of nature has perfect equality”. But in the state of nature Locke also says that everyone is going to be punished equality for all the offenses they have done.

    2. People leave the state of nature and join the political society established by the government because they feel more secure in there than the state of nature. They want to be with people who are already united to protect each other.

    3. A government can only dissolve under the conditions of the people, for example is the government makes a law that the people didn’t like, they do not have to follow what he says and in that moment the government can be dissolved because he didn’t follow the rules.

  10. 1.) John Locke describes the state of nature as being "a state of perfect freedom..." Everyone is equal and no one should have more power than another. Eventhough everyone is free, they need to restrain from abusing others. Locke says "No one ought to harm another in his life, health, liberty, or possesion". If anyone does hurt or abuse another human being, than other individuals have the right to institue a natural law. Locke says "Every offence that can be committed in the state of Nature may,in the state of Nature, be also punished equally, and as far forth, as it may, in a commonwealth."

2.)People leave the state of nature and join a political society by establishing a government because when they are free and alone, they feel "unsafe and insecure". They are more willing to quit because of fear and continual danger. Locke says "It is without reason that he seeks out and is willing to join in society with others who are already united, or have a mind to united, or have a mind to unite for the mutual preservation of their lives, liberties, and estates, which i call by the general name-property"

3.)A government can be dissolved when people make laws without the consent of the people. Locke says " When any one, or more, shall take upon them to make laws whom the people have not appointed so to do, they make laws without authority... may constitue to themselves a new legislative".

  12. 1. Locke writes that the tate of nature is where all "powers are and jurisdiction is reciprocal". This balance of powers in check of other powers leads inevitably to a balance or equality where everyone has the right to "Health, liberty, or possesions". Hence the state of nature is where no man need be afraid of another's power because all power is in balance and equal.

    1. 1.) John Locke describes the state of nature by saying "being equal one amongst another." In other words, Locke believed that everyone has the same rights and no one should be granted more power over their neighbors. He also establishes that if one abuses their power by abusing or hurting another being, under natural law, the abuser can be subject to punishment.

2.) People leave the state of nature and join a political society by establishing a government because they want to feel and be secure. The best way of doing this is to create a government where everyone has "a mind of mutual preservations of their lives, liberties, and estates."

3.) It is acceptable to dissolve a government under the conditions of the abuse of power, the threat of riding or limiting the power from one [citizens] of their rights/power, and/or making laws without the people's consent.

    1. Locke describes the state of nature as equality for all. That everyone has the same quantity of power. "Everyone is born to the same advantages." People are all considered having the same rights despite who you are.

    2. People tend to leave the state of nature and join a political society by establishing a government because, its easier for them to join the people with the same beliefs and opinions. They feel safer with the people who are ununited to others, giving up many things just to sercure their safty.

    3. The only way a government is able to be dissolved is if the government makes/creates a law without the concent of the people.

  15. 1. Locke describes the state of nature as being one of perfect equality, and states that, "...all power and jurisdiction is reciprocal, no one having more than another...". He goes on to say that if someone has the power to punish another for any transgressions, then everybody should have the power to do so.

    2. People leave the state of nature and join a political society because although everyone is one equal standing with one another, they still feel "very unsafe, very insecure.". In turn, it makes people willingly leave the state of nature, however free it is, and join a society with others that are already united, or plan to unite for mutual preservation of their "lives, liberties, and estates."

    3. It is acceptable to dissolve a government when the person or people in charge starts to make laws without the consent of the people. The people then are not bound by the laws and can make a new government that they think would be the best replacement.

  18. - Jonh Locke describes the state of nature as "a state also of equality", by which everyone under this law is born with the same advantages and should be able to do what they beleive is right for everyone. Even so, with this principal idea of not allowing one to "authorize us to destroy one another" in the state of Nature, it is not as "free" as Locke says we might think.

-People, usually the commonwealth, leave the state of nature and join a political society by establishing a government because they want to secure what they know is precius to them: property. The idea of having it "constantly exposed to the invasion of others" would make the commonwealth find people like them, interested in " lives, liberties, and estates" to protect themselves.

-It is acceptable to dissolve the government when any person or a group, take the right to "make laws without authority" of the people. This could lead to the formation of a new legislative because every participant in this government should be able to "defend himself" from all the aggressors.

  19. 1.) Locke explains the state of nature as a matter of impartiality meaning everyone is equal , there is not one individual that is above anyone or holds more power , everyone has the same equal rights.

2.) People leave the state of nature and want to join a political society by establishing a government because in the state of nature things are not "secure". Even though the state of nature is free and open doors for anybody they still are "full of fears and continual dangers". They rather join a political society in which they tend to be more stable and have more reasoning over important situations that involve us.

3.) It is acceptable to dissolve the government if they decide to pass a law without the approval of the citizens , if they just decide to go against our will.

  20. 1. Locke describes the state of nature as an open-minded, free interpretation. One does not have more or less power over another, but is more fair then anything. Locke believed in nothing more then equality and the freedom, happiness, and liberty that one individual deserves.

    2. People leave the "state of nature" to join a more political society because in the state of nature, one may feel insecure. At that point, they are "forced" or given the opportunity to form their own government by means of sacrificing their own freedom for survival.

    3. A government may absolutely be dissolved if the government decides to create laws without the consent of the people. If the laws were made with no authority, then by all means, citizens are not required to follow the laws.

    1. I disagree with Adrian's third answer because making a law without the consent of the people doesn't give them the right to dissolve that government. A law that takes away certain freedoms or is completely against "state of nature" is when the people have a reasonable right to dissolve the government

  22. Locke describes the state of nature as one in which man has perfect freedom to "order their actions, and dispose of their possessions and persons as they think fit..." basically a situation of "every man for himself"

People leave the state of nature to join a political society due to the constant threat of "the invasion of others". This threat makes a person willing to give up their freedom and join others who have already United in exchange for security.

It is acceptable to dissolve a government when it betrays the peoples trust by making laws without their consent, or when the government uses force without right against the people.

  23. 1) In John Locke's description of state of nature, he claims that humans are free, but at the same time restricted only by the laws of nature. There is no need for a government to be in place with this scenario, since Locke believes that morals restrict possible malice.

    2) Some people view the State of Nature as an unsecure enviornment to live in because of the great chance that our "unalienable rights" are violated, due to the possibility of people lacking the adequate morals to respect the rights of another being. They turn to a political society through government so there can be a form of order and security in their state.

    3) It is acceptbale to dissolve a government when there are laws/policies in place that threaten or weaken the "unalienable rights", and all was done to make an attempt to reform.

    1. I agree with statement 3 because when the government causes more harm to the people it stopped working for the people and is acceptable to dissolve the government and replace it with something fitting to them

  24. 1.) In the beginning paragraph of Locke's excerpt he describes the state of nature being that men are naturally born in by suggesting that it is a state of "perfect freedom to order their actions, and dispose of their possessions and persons as they think fit," which can be interpreted as the equal rights among men. Locke also goes into depth on this subject when he writes, “A state of equality, wherein all the power and jurisdiction is reciprocal,” in the second paragraph.

2.) Locke then explains that man will leave the state of nature to join a political society with only with the idea “to better preserve himself, his liberty and property” which constitutes that every being deserves that right. This can tie into the idea of equality that was first recognized by Locke.

3.) According to John Locke’s writing one of the conditions to dissolve a government would be a situation where the people have decided to not follow the laws or conditions made by someone who has taken it upon themselves to be a deciding factor in the government; in other words someone who has derived laws from force instead of by the consent of those who are being governed.

  25. 1. Locke describes the state of nature as a society in which everyone is perfectly equal and are "...born to all the same advantages of Nature..." This means that everybody has the same rights except they cant abuse the other people's freedom.

    2. People leave the state of nature and join a political society by establishing a government because they might not feel safe or secure in the state of nature, on the other hand when a government is established the people have more of a word or right to speak out and decide whats good for them and the rest of the people.

    3. When the government commits a crime or does something without the consent of the people, that's when its acceptable to dissolve it. If a law abuses their freedoms or takes away their rights, the people should be able to overthrow their government.

  26. 1. Locke describes the law of nature as everybody having the same rights and advantages like everyone else for we were all created equal.
    2. According to Locke, the reason why man leave the state of nature to join a political society is because those men do not find stability in the state of nature, there for they look for a way in which they can have power and control over others. They also feel a sense of security for they do not trust the morals of other men to be in order every time.
